Frequently asked questions
What macOS versions does Press support?
Press runs on macOS 15 (Sequoia) or later. It ships as a universal binary for both Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
Does Press collect any data?
No. Press has no account system and carries no analytics or third-party SDKs. Every conversion runs through AVFoundation, ImageIO, and libwebp on your Mac, and the files you convert never leave it. The only network use is Apple's App Store purchase and restore flow.
Where do converted files go?
Next to the source, named name (Press).mp4, .jpg, and so on. If that name already exists, Press adds a number instead of overwriting. The original file is never modified.
Why did Press ask for access to a folder?
Press is sandboxed by the Mac App Store, so it can only write where you allow. The first time you convert a file from a folder, Press asks you to confirm that folder; the grant is remembered on your Mac. You can change it under Settings → Output folder. If the dialog opens on the wrong folder, choose the folder that contains the source file, or a parent of it.
A conversion failed. What should I try first?
Read the message in the job row: it names the file and says whether Press could not read it or could not write the output. A file Press cannot read is usually in a format outside this release (MKV, AVI, and audio-only files are not supported). A write failure usually means the folder grant does not cover the source; re-grant it from Settings. If the same file keeps failing, email [email protected] with:
- Your macOS version (Apple menu → About This Mac).
- Whether your Mac has Apple silicon or Intel.
- The source file's type and size, and the output you picked.
- The error text from the job row, or a screenshot of it.
The output is over the size limit I picked.
Press sets the video bitrate from the byte budget and the clip's duration, aims 10 percent under the preset, and re-encodes once at a lower rate if the first pass lands over. If a file still comes out over the limit, email us the source's duration and resolution and the size you got; that is a bug we want to see. For a smaller file on purpose, choose Custom and type a lower number, or add 720p.
How do I restore my purchase on a new Mac?
Open Press, go to Settings → Press Pro, and click Restore Purchases. Make sure you're signed into the same Apple Account on the Mac App Store that you used to buy Press Pro. If the restore doesn't complete, email us and include your Apple Account's receipt or order ID.
How do I report a bug or request a format?
Email [email protected]. Every message is read by a human. Requests for formats outside this release, such as MKV input or GIF output, are how we decide what goes in next.
