PNG to JPG on Mac

Finder's Convert Image quick action writes JPEG from a PNG with four size tiers, and Preview's Export dialog does the same, so macOS covers the single file. Press is the version with a number on it: JPEG quality as a percentage, a Max size in pixels, and a queue that takes a folder of screenshots in one drop.

  1. Drop the PNG files onto Press.
  2. Under Image, choose JPEG. Screenshots with text keep their edges best at 90 percent or above; photos are fine at 85.
  3. Click Convert. Each file is written as name (Press).jpg beside the source.

What you get

Container
A .jpg beside the PNG.
Codec
JPEG through ImageIO.
Quality
Lossless in, lossy out. Fine text and hard edges in screenshots show JPEG artifacts first, so raise the slider for those.
Metadata
PNG metadata is not copied. Transparency has nowhere to go in a JPEG and is flattened.
Why is my transparent PNG's background wrong?

JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent regions are flattened during encoding. If the transparency matters, keep PNG or, with Press Pro, choose WebP.

Is PNG to JPG free?

Yes, one file at a time. Batch and Max size are Press Pro.

Press converts video and images on your Mac. The download is free, and Press Pro is a one-time $14.99 unlock for batch conversion, size presets, and WebP.
