AVIF to JPG on Mac
AVIF arrives from the web, not from a camera, and the built-in image tools are shaped around the other direction. Finder's Convert Image writes JPEG, PNG, or HEIF, and Preview's Export writes JPEG, JPEG 2000, PDF, PNG, and TIFF; both write JPEG from the sources they can read. Press reads AVIF through ImageIO on macOS 15 and later and writes a JPEG beside it, for one file or a folder.
- Drop the AVIF files onto Press.
- Under Image, choose JPEG. Quality defaults to 85 percent; set a Max size if the image is for a form with a pixel limit.
- Click Convert. Each file is written as name (Press).jpg beside the source.
What you get
- Container
- A .jpg next to the .avif.
- Codec
- JPEG through ImageIO.
- Quality
- AVIF is a lossy format built on the AV1 video codec; JPEG is a second lossy pass. Keep quality at 85 or above.
- Metadata
- Not carried over. Orientation is baked into the pixels.
Why does the AVIF not open in the app I need?
AVIF is newer than many of the apps and forms that still expect JPEG. Converting once fixes the upload; keep the AVIF if you want the smaller file for the web.
Can Press write AVIF as well?
Yes, with Press Pro. AVIF output honors the quality slider. Measured on the same image, 30 percent produced a 6.5 KB file and 95 percent produced 210 KB.
Is AVIF to JPG free?
Yes, one file at a time.
Press converts video and images on your Mac. The download is free, and Press Pro is a one-time $14.99 unlock for batch conversion, size presets, and WebP.
