WebP to PNG on Mac
Finder's Convert Image and Preview's Export both write PNG, and Preview can export a selection of images together, so a WebP that Preview opens can go out that way. Where the native tools stop is WebP as an output, which is why a folder that needs both directions ends up in a third-party app anyway. Press handles the round trip: WebP in through ImageIO, PNG out, and with Press Pro, PNG back to WebP from the same window.
- Drop the WebP files, or the folder they came in, onto Press.
- Under Image, choose PNG. Set a Max size in pixels if the images are larger than you need.
- Click Convert. Each file is written as name (Press).png beside the source.
What you get
- Container
- A .png next to the .webp.
- Codec
- PNG, lossless, through ImageIO.
- Quality
- Every decoded pixel is kept. A lossy WebP already lost detail; PNG will not add it back, and the file grows. Transparency in the WebP is preserved in the PNG.
- Metadata
- Any metadata in the WebP is not copied. Orientation is applied to the pixels.
Why did the site give me a WebP?
Browsers and CDNs serve WebP because it is smaller than PNG or JPEG for the same picture. Saving the image keeps that format, and some apps and forms still expect PNG or JPEG.
Does transparency survive?
Yes. PNG supports an alpha channel, and Press keeps the one in the WebP.
Is WebP to PNG free?
Yes, one file at a time. PNG is a free output; WebP output and batch are Press Pro.
Press converts video and images on your Mac. The download is free, and Press Pro is a one-time $14.99 unlock for batch conversion, size presets, and WebP.
